Engaging God

By philip.kua, November 11, 2009 9:38 pm

It has been on my mind, that I could just as well titled the November series in church – as “persistent prayer”, because that is how I think engaging with God is. That long conversation with God, presenting my case before Him, arguing points, the pro’s and con’s, the best and worst outcomes, doing a SWOT with the divine, feeling and communicating the emotions as we talk….frank, honest, transparent…..and listening to Him, letting Him touch my spirit, letting His rest and peace fall on me.

Perhaps my language used in communicating with God might sometimes be ugly and raw but the story of God obliging a wrestling match with Jacob assures that God obliges to hear my rambling and ranting. It was a wrestle not a ballroom dance!

Wonder if anyone had similar experience to this: When I was a student and studying hard for an education that will earn me big bucks. This is so I can drive a nice car (one that people will turn around to see who’s  behind the wheel?). But after 9 changes of cars later, I find myself buying not a nice car but yet another sensible car. After the hard work of chasing after, wrestling with, ratinalizing it out, we find that the desire for what we set out to get – has waned and we are quite happy for it to be archived into the “once I had a dream for….” folder.

In engaging and wrestling with God, the biggest prize for me is to conclude that “Jesus, you are enough for me”. The biggest prize for God in obliging a struggle with us…is the time spent together…and my willing surrender to Him. Philippians 3:12 ““I press on to take hold of that for which Christ has took hold of me.”
