  • What do these passages tell us about God?
  • What do these passages tell us about you and your life?
  • What did you like about this passage?
  • What did you not like about this passage?

Application

When facing hardships we are often tempted to think that doing what is righteous is not worth it. God wants us to pay the price of righteousness, even when doing right only get you into trouble.

Discuss one or more of the following questions:

  1. Share a time when you had to choose a path that you felt was right but it was very unpopular. How did you feel leading up to that decision? What were the consequences afterwards?
  2. In 1 Peter 3:15 Peter tells us to ‘always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.’ Go around the Life Group now with each one stating in 20 seconds why you believe in Jesus and why it is important to them.
  3. One of the clear teachings in the Bible regarding doing what is right is to, as much as it depends on us, to maintain right relationships (Romans 12:18). Ron reminded us to be right in our relationships for our relationship with Jesus Christ will either flourish or fade in accordance with our relationships with others. During the sermon, Ron also asked us to send a text to a person that we needed to catch up with in order to begin building a bridge of understanding with them. Have you contacted that person yet? If not, take a moment to text now saying, ‘Hi Xxxxx, can we catch up? Without naming the person, go around the group and briefly share in summary why you feel you need to meet up with this person. Make sure you spend some time as a Life Group praying for the Spirit of God to move and to bring further reconciliation and healing in these relationships.
  4. Put your self in the place of Noah (1 Peter 3:19-22) who obeyed God regardless of the criticism of the whole world and the seemingly illogical request to build an ark to house his family and two of each animal in a place when at the time there was no water and no sign of judgement. What a fool he must have looked! Share a time when you were a ‘fool for Jesus’? What is stopping you from being a greater fool? How can the Life Group help you in this?
  5. Ron concluded saying, ‘may there be two things that come from the devastating shock we have together experienced with Wei’s death, a new care for each other and a new clarity in our witness.’ How did you respond to that? How might you action that this week?
  6. In 1 Peter 3:15 it says, ‘But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord.’  The seat of all our desires and choices comes from what we worship. James K. A. Smith in his brilliant book, You Are What You Love, says that ‘we worship what we love and we might not love what we think.’ Briefly share what you love. Now spend some time in quietness and allow the Spirit to speak to you and ask Him what is it that you really love. The key indicator is how you would cope if these people or things were taken away. How might we orientate ourselves so that our love is first and foremost for God? How can the Life Group help in this?

Response

  • Is there a truth that God wants you to obey?
  • What will you do to obey this? I will…
