Jesus wants me to tell others He is alive. (The Great Commission)

MATTHEW 28:19-20

Story Focus: Jesus wants me to tell others He is alive. We end the month with Jesus giving all of His followers a special command. Go and tell. Go and tell everyone everywhere that Jesus is alive and He wants to be their friend forever. People who follow Jesus have been doing this ever since He came back. That’s why we know Jesus is alive, and it’s up to us to keep telling others so everyone everywhere knows that Jesus is alive!

WHAT YOU NEED: A Bible

LEADER: “Hi, friends! All month long we have been celebrating Easter and how Jesus is alive! I have another super special true story from the Bible (hold up Bible) to tell you today, but I need your help. Can you be my story helpers? (Pause.)

“Great! Like I said, today’s true story comes from the Bible. (Hold up the Bible, open it, and lay it to the side.)

“Our story is about Jesus and His friends. Jesus died and came back, just like He said He would. Jesus’ friends knew that Jesus is alive because they saw Him and talked with Him and even ate breakfast with Him on the beach!

“One day, Jesus told His friends to meet Him on a mountain. Okay, story helpers. I want everyone to stand up and pretend you are climbing a mountain like this. (Demonstrate.) Climb, climb, climb to the top of the mountain! Whew! We made it! Thank you, story helpers! You can sit down now.

“Jesus’ friends did what He said and they met Him on a mountain. When they were on the mountain together, Jesus told His friends He had a very important job for them to do. It’s an important job He wants US to do, too.

“Do you want to know what it is? Say, ‘I want to know!’

“Jesus said our important job is to tell EVERYONE (hold arms out straight in front of you, palms up, and bring them back to holding them up on each side of you) EVERYWHERE (raise both arms straight up overhead and down oneach side like making a rainbow in the air) that Jesus is alive and we can follow Him!

“Whoa! That is a very important job! Do you think we can do it? Sure we can! Stand up, story helpers, and let’s say that together. Just say what I say and do what I do.”

CHILDREN AND LEADER: “Go and tell EVERYONE (hold arms out straight in front of you, palms up, and bring them back to holding them up on each side of you) EVERYWHERE (raise both arms straight up overhead and down on each side like making a rainbow in the air) that Jesus is alive and we can follow Him!”

LEADER: “You’re doing great, story helpers! Let’s do that together again!”
CHILDREN AND LEADER: “Go and tell EVERYONE (hold arms out straight in front of you, palms up, and bring them back to holding them up on each side of you) EVERYWHERE (raise both arms straight up overhead and down on each side like making a rainbow in the air) that Jesus is alive and we can follow Him!”
LEADER: “Yay! You did it! Now look at a friend beside you, and let’s say it again.”
CHILDREN AND LEADER: “Go and tell EVERYONE (hold arms out straight in front of you, palms up, and bring them back to holding them up on each side of you) EVERYWHERE (raise both arms straight up overhead and down on each side like making a rainbow in the air) that Jesus is alive and we can follow Him!”
LEADER: “Now look at another friend beside you and let’s say it again.”
CHILDREN AND LEADER: “Go and tell EVERYONE (hold arms out straight in front of you, palms up, and bring them back to holding them up on each side of you) EVERYWHERE (raise both arms straight up overhead and down on each side like making a rainbow in the air) that Jesus is alive and we can follow Him!”
LEADER: “Great job, everyone! You can sit down.

“That is the important job that Jesus told His friends on the mountain to do, AND He is telling us to do today. Jesus wants us to go and tell EVERYONE (hold arms out straight in front of you, palms up, and bring them back to holding them up on each side of you) EVERYWHERE (raise both arms straight up overhead and down on each side like making a rainbow in the air) that Jesus is alive and we can follow Him! Who is alive?”

CHILDREN AND LEADER: “Jesus is alive!”
LEADER: “One more time. Who is alive?”
CHILDREN AND LEADER: “Jesus is alive!”
LEADER: “Thank you for being such great story helpers today. Now it’s time to close our eyes and talk to God.”

PRAYER
LEADER: “Dear God, we want to do the important job Jesus gave us and tell everyone everywhere that Jesus is alive and we can follow Him. Please help us do this very important job so everyone will know how much Jesus loves them and that He wants to be their friend forever. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Choose one of the following activities to do with your child

GO TELL
WHAT YOU NEED: “Tell It” Activity Page, copy paper, and crayons

WHAT YOU DO:
BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Copy “Tell It” on cardstock.
DURING THE ACTIVITY: Guide kids to do the line tangle and color their papers. Talk about all the places we can tell people Jesus is alive.
AFTER THE ACTIVITY: Talk about the Bible story.

WHAT YOU SAY:
BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: “Come sit down with me. We heard how Jesus wants us to tell other people that He is alive.”
DURING THE ACTIVITY: “Look at your paper. Tell me what you see in the pictures. (Pause.) I see a playground. Color the playground on your paper. (Pause.) You can tell people that Jesus is alive at the playground. Follow the line to the playground. (Pause.) I see a grocery store. Color the grocery store on your paper. (Pause.) You can tell people that Jesus is alive at the grocery store. Follow the line to the grocery store. (Pause.) I see a dentist. Color the dentist on your paper. (Pause.) You can tell people that Jesus is alive at the dentist. Follow the line to the dentist. (Pause.) I see a library. Color the library on your paper. (Pause.) You can tell people that Jesus is alive at the library. Follow the line to the library. You can tell others that Jesus is alive everywhere you go.”
AFTER THE ACTIVITY: “In today’s story, Jesus told His friends, the disciples, to meet Him on the mountain. Jesus told the disciples He had an important job for them to do. It’s an important job He wants us to do, too. Jesus said our important job is to tell everyone everywhere that He is alive and we can follow Him! Who is alive? Jesus is alive.”

FRIENDSHIP FLOWER
WHAT YOU NEED: “Center” and “Petals” Activity Pages, white cardstock, crayons, washable markers, scissors, permanent marker, and glue sticks

WHAT YOU DO:
BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Copy “Center” and “Petals” onto cardstock
DURING THE ACTIVITY: Encourage children to color and cut their petals. Help as needed. Encourage children to share a petal with the other friends in the class and then glue them all to the center of their flower.
AFTER THE ACTIVITY: Review the story.

WHAT YOU SAY:
BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: “Let’s make a flower. We’ll share the petals you decorate with each other.
DURING THE ACTIVITY: “Color the petals on your paper and cut them out. (Pause.) Great! Share a petal with your friend, and say, ‘Jesus is alive.’ (Pause.) Now share a petal with a different friend and say, ‘Jesus is alive.’ (Repeat until they’ve exchanged several petals.) Now glue all of your petals around the circle on your paper like this. (Demonstrate.) Look at your beautiful flowers.”
AFTER THE ACTIVITY: “In our story, Jesus told His friends He had an important job for them and for us. Jesus wants us to tell everyone everywhere that He is alive. Who is alive? Jesus is alive.”
