Lesson Summary for the Teacher
Above All – Crucified and Risen

(Supporting: John 16, Matthew 26)
We’ll see through John 18:12–20:23, how Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection makes it possible for us to have a forever relationship with God. Jesus humbly gave Himself for us as the ultimate sacrifice to rescue us from the consequences of our sin.
Bottom Line: Jesus put us first
This is what Easter is all about. Jesus put us first. He gave up everything He deserved to rescue us from the consequences of sin. Jesus conquered death and is alive! We hope that kids leave with a clearer understanding of how much God loves us and wants to have a relationship with us through His Son.

Setting up the story
- Recap: The religious leaders were plotting to get rid of Jesus

- They didn’t like how Jesus claimed to be the Son of God
- They also believed that their way of following God (following rules) was the right way; Jesus taught that God really wants us to love Him and love others
- They made a sneaky plan with Judas
- Judas turned Jesus over to the leaders for 30 pieces of silver
- Once the mob arrested Jesus, all of His disciples scattered
- A few followed at a distance to see where the soldiers were taking Jesus
Triple denial
- Peter and John hid when they saw that Jesus was being taken into the high priest’s courtyard
- The high priest knew John, so John went in with Jesus
- Peter had to wait outside
- A servant woman asked Peter if he knew Jesus; Peter said no
- Meanwhile, the high priest, Annas, was questioning Jesus—trying to trick Him
- Jesus: John 18:20-21
- The high priest had Jesus tied up and sent Him to another high priest, Caiaphas
- In the courtyard, Peter stood near a fire
- The men asked him if he was one of Jesus’ disciples; Peter said no
- A man thought he recognized Peter from the garden; Peter said no
- A rooster crowed
- Peter remembered what Jesus told him—that before the rooster crowed, he would say three times that he didn’t know Jesus
Our Savior
- Meanwhile, the leaders had taken Jesus to the palace of the Roman governor, Pilate
- Pilate asked the religious leaders whey they were bringing Jesus to him
- The leaders said that Jesus had committed crimes—even though He really hadn’t
- Pilate told the priests to take Jesus back and judge Him by their own law
- The leaders explained that if they judged Jesus by their laws, they couldn’t put Him to death
- Pilate questioned Jesus
- Jesus said: John 18:37
- Pilate told the crowd that he couldn’t find any fault with what Jesus said
- The crowd shouted to crucify Him
- Pilate handed Jesus over to be put to death on a cross
- Jesus was forced to carry His own cross to Golgotha
- Soldiers nailed Him to the cross and hoisted Him up, with a sign that said “King of the Jews”
- Jesus’ mother Mary, her sister, and Mary Magdalene were all there
- Jesus asked John to take care of His mother
- Jesus said: “It is finished,” bowed His head, and died
The empty tomb
- Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus’ body
- He and Nicodemus placed Jesus’ body in a tomb
- A large stone was rolled over the entrance
- Mary Magdalene followed them
- Early Sunday morning, she went back to the tomb
- The heavy stone had been rolled away; the tomb was EMPTY!
- Mary thought that someone must have stolen Jesus’ body, so she ran to Peter and John and told them that Jesus was missing: John 20:2
- They all ran to the tomb; Peter and John looked inside and found the cloth sand linen that Jesus had been buried in
- When Mary looked in the tomb, she saw two angels
- They asked her why she was crying; she said: John 20:13
- She turned and saw a gardener; the gardener asked her why she was crying
- He said her name, and she realized it was Jesus
- Jesus said: John 20:17
- Mary ran to where the disciples were staying and told them what had happened
Wrapping up the story
- Jesus appeared to His disciples more times, which proved that He HAD risen from the grave
- He was alive!
- When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the price for our sin
- All of the promises in Scripture had led to this moment
- When Jesus rose out of that grave, He turned the world upside down
- BL: Jesus put us first.
If we put our trust in Jesus, we can have a relationship with God that will last forever

WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, paper tubes
WHAT YOU DO:
- Provide Bibles for those who didn’t bring one, and ask kids to look up Philippians 2:3. Use the navigation tips from Week 1 if they need help
finding the verse. - Say the memory verse together—a few phrases at a time.
- Remind the kids that when Jesus died, His body was placed in tomb or cave.
- Ask if they’ve ever visited a cave. What does their voice sound like in a cave?
- Give each kid a paper tube and let them take turns reciting (or reading) the memory verse by speaking through the tube to sound like they’re in a cave.
- Challenge the group to share ways they can live out Philippians 2:3 by being humble and giving up what they think they deserve today as they celebrate Easter with their family and friends.
WHAT YOU SAY:
“Jesus was in the tomb for three days, but He didn’t stay there. He came back to life. What do you think the voices of the people sounded like when they came into the tomb and found it EMPTY! (Pause and let kids take turns demonstrating by speaking into their paper tubes.) If you had been there, what do you think you would have said? (Pause as kids once again respond.)
We can echo our praise for Jesus’ power, love, victory, and HUMILITY because we know the whole story. We know that Jesus humbled Himself in order to do something that was absolutely impossible for any of us to do on our own. He endured the cross to pay for our sin and then conquered the grave by coming back to life. He made a way for us to reach God—something we could never do without His help.
“What better way to show our gratitude to the One who rescued us than by following His example! Easter is a perfect day for us to echo our own praises in celebration for all Jesus has done for us. When we do this, we echo His love to others. Let’s echo today’s Bottom Line together. Jesus put us first.”

• How did Jesus put His enemies first?
• How did Jesus put you first?
• Why do you think Jesus put us first?
• What does it look like to follow Jesus?
• So, what does Easter mean to you? If you’ve heard the Easter story lots of times already, what’s something that stuck out to you today in particular? Is there anything you heard that you hadn’t really thought about yet?
• And if you’ve never really heard the story, what’s something you want to know more about?
Note: For kids who share something that might necessitate a deeper conversation, follow up with them at a later time, like when everyone in the group is working on another activity or when you’re waiting for them to be picked up. If you have kids who seem to be ready to take the next step in their faith, follow your church’s protocol for kids who are ready to start following Jesus. For kids whose parents are believers or regular church attendees, be sure to involve them in the process and let them know their kids are asking faith-related questions.
