Lean on Me (Servant Principle)

Bible Reference:
Philippians 2:3-8

In Philippians 2:3-8 Paul explains how Jesus is the ultimate example of humility. As you deal with one another, you should think and act as Jesus did . . . He was humble and obeyed God completely. He did this even though it led to his death, (NIrV). As God’s Son, Jesus was equal with God, but instead of using that to His advantage, Jesus put us first and made a way for us to have a relationship with God.

Bottom Line: Put others first because Jesus put you first.
This is what Easter is all about. Jesus put us first. He gave up everything He deserved to rescue us from the consequences of sin. Jesus conquered death and is alive! We hope that kids leave with a clearer understanding of how much God loves us and wants to have a relationship with us through His Son.

Setting up the story

  • Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins and then came back to life
    • Jesus changed the way people thought about God
    • He made a way for us to have a relationship with God, without sin being in the way
    • Jesus also changed the way people thought about how they should treat others
    • The apostle Paul wrote about that in a letter to a church in Philippi
    • Paul couldn’t visit the Philippians because he was in prison
    • Paul wanted to encourage them to live like Jesus did
    • Philippians 2:3, 5-8

    Looking up

    • Paul said that we should look at the ways Jesus showed humility . . . and then we can choose to be humble ourselves
    • What does it really look like to value others more than yourself?
    • Scenario: wrapped up in a TV show instead of finishing homework, feeding the dog
    • When you’re thinking about yourself, you don’t have time to think about other people and what THEY might need
    • We can start putting others first by remembering what Jesus did for us
    • Then we can choose to follow His example and show others that they’re important

    No need to brag

    • Scenario: bragging about money, possessions (the “one-up challenge)
    • Like Paul wrote, it helps when you remember what Jesus did for you
    • Jesus didn’t take advantage of the fact that He is God’s Son
    • He always looked to SERVE others
    • Philippians 2:6-7

    • Scenario: picking the video game, picking the character, bickering with siblings
    • It’s not okay to be selfish or lose your temper because you’re not getting what you want
    • Like Paul said, start by thinking about Jesus
    • When you remember everything Jesus did for you, it’s easier to follow His example
    • Then you can choose to put your brother or sister FIRST

    • When you feel frustrated or angry, it can be hard to stop and ask yourself what Jesus might do
    • Press PAUSE, take a breath, and choose to respond in a humble way
    • Jesus chose humility for you and me

    1. INDEX FINGER FACE

    WHAT YOU NEED: Thin Markers

    WHAT YOU DO:

    • Guide kids to stand in a circle.
    • Lead them to think of someone they’ll put first this week.
    • Guide them to hold up their index finger when they think of someone.
    • Set out the markers and invite kids to draw a smiley face on the tip of their index finger, to represent the person they’ll put first.
    • Use the conversation below as a guide to lead kids into prayer.

    WHAT YOU SAY:

    “Thank You, Jesus, for putting us first. Since You loved us SO much and put us first, help us love others and put them first. (Guide kids to hold up their index finger people.) Help us be like You and put our brothers, our sisters, our friends, our families, our neighbors, and even our enemies first. We love You, Lord. Amen.”
