Observation

  • What is the key message of this passage? Explain why you think so?
  • What does this passage tell us about God?
  • Are there truths in this passage that contradicts your own thinking about God, self or the world?

Application

As disciples of Jesus we try to discern God’s guidance and will in our decision-making.  This is easier to discern when the Bible makes it clear, but there are many decisions in our life that the Bible does not speak to and we are left uncertain.  How do we make decisions into the will of God when we don’t know what it is?  The characters in the story of Ruth help us.

Watch the video from the Bible Project in the Book of Ruth for an overview and the flow of thought.

Discuss one or more of the following questions:

  1. In the book of Ruth, everything seemingly ‘just so happens’, but as we know, nothing really just so happens without the hand of God. Share about a time when you’ve recognised God’s hand silently working in your life.
  2. In light of Ruth and Naomi’s story, what do you think Ps Chee meant when he said to ‘Focus on the decision maker and not just the decision’?
  3. Read Romans 8:28 – ‘and we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them’ and Psalm 37:23-24 – ‘The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.’ Has there been a time when your relationship with God has affected a decision you’ve had to make? How?
  4. What does focusing more on your relationship with God look like for you?
  5. Read Matthew 6:25-33.  When we seek his rule and righteousness in our lives, his will for us becomes clear and we do not have to worry about our future. How does this approach to life and decision-making challenge you and the way you make decisions now?
  6. What are one or two things that God wants you to obey from today’s scriptures and discussion?
