SOAR DISCUSSION GUIDE

In this World but not of the World

Guest Speaker Andrew Laird, Sunday 18th June

Vision

To build disciples who represents Jesus to everyone, everywhere with everything

A

Previous Obedience Step

One of the key values in discipleship is hearing and obeying the Word. Therefore, it is important to have accountability to one another for our step of obedience from studying the Word. Spend the first part of your discussion asking – how did your step of obedience go from last time we met?

Scripture

Read:

  • Matthew 13:24 – 30
  • Matthew 13:36 – 43
U

Observation

  • What do these passages tell us about God?
  • What do these passages tell us about you and your life?
  • What did you like about this passage?
  • What did you not like about this passage?

Application

Andrew shared that this parable illustrates that both wheat and weeds people will co-exist in the same world until Jesus comes again. This can be implied in the field of work. He encouraged us to be in the world but not of the world by helping wheat to flourish and weeds to wilt. He shared four postures how we can do this:

  1. Cooperation (Romans 12:18) – to do as much good as we can in the mess like Joseph
  2. Subversion – have a way of working that challenges the way an industry might do its work
  3. Exposure (Ephesians 5:13) – have nothing to do with deeds of darkness but expose it
  4. Separation (2 Cor 6:17) – we need to separate from it all together

Discuss the following questions:

  • Can you identify ways in which you have used one of these four postures in your workplace in the past? Discuss your experience.
  • Is there a posture Jesus might want you to take in your work right now? What would that practically look like?

Response

  1. Is there a truth that God wants you to obey?
  2. What will you do to obey this? I will…
