Observation

  • What is the key message of this passage? Explain why you think so?
  • What does this passage tell us about God?
  • Are there truths in this passage that contradicts your own thinking about God, self or the world?

Application

As disciples of Jesus we try to discern God’s guidance and will in our decision-making.  This is easier to discern when the Bible makes it clear, but there are many decisions in our life that the Bible does not speak to and we are left uncertain.  How do we make decisions into the will of God when we don’t know what it is?  The characters in the story of Ruth help us.

Watch the YouTube video from the Bible Project in the Book of Ruth for an overview and the flow of thought.

Discuss one or more of the following questions:

  1. Share a time when you made a decision that blessed others but was at personal cost to you.

  2. Faith is defined in Hebrews 11:1 as, ‘the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.’  What is happening in your life right now that makes it difficult for you to see God’s hand on your life?  What can help you refocus from self to God in faith?

  3. Ruth responded from a position of weakness with great faith leaving an amazing legacy.  What legacy can you decide to leave behind even in the midst of your present circumstances?  What is your next step: Prayer – Surrender – Plan – Take a step?

  4. What are some ways right now that you can position yourself before God as a lifestyle in order to set you up for making godly decisions in the future?

  5. Name some of Ruth’s character traits that show up in this story.  How do these traits influence her decision-making?  Pick one that you would like to develop in yourself.  How might you be able to do this?

  6. What are one or two things that God wants you to obey from today’s scriptures and discussion?
