Observation

  • What is the key message of this passage? Explain why you think so?

  • What does this passage tell us about God?

  • Are there truths in this passage that contradicts your own thinking about God, self or the world?

Application

Discuss one or more of the following questions:

  1. John 13:34-35 says, ‘A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.’  The quality of our relationship with others is a reflection of the quality of our relationship with God.  Discuss.
  2. Share about someone in your life who is/has caused you difficulty. Think of how you can go beyond your feelings to act in agape love towards them.  Spend a few moments each day this week praying for them according to Matthew 5:44.  Pray for as many good things to happen to them as you can think of.  Next time you meet as a Life Group share what change (if any) has occurred in your own heart.
  3. The Greek word for perfect, τέλειός (teleios) in Matthew 5:48 within the context of the passage refers to maturity.  In particular it refers to the completeness of Christian character.  Maturity does not happen overnight but is a step-by-step life-long process.  What can you put in place that can start you on the right path to a Christ-like life?
  4. Rather than trying to find the right friend it is more important to be the right friend.  When you work on your self you will find that people will want to be your friend.  Which one of the following do you need to work on to become a better person and a better friend?  Explain why.
    1. unity (teamwork, working together for mutual benefit),
    2. integrity (being the same person inside and out, no facades)
    3. honesty (being honest with self and others, let your yes be yes and your no be no)
  5. What beliefs/values about relationships/friendships did you learn from your family upbringing?  Share one that was aligned to the Bible and share one that was not.
  6. Take time this week to truly sit down and listen to someone else’s story.  Instead of you doing all the talking, do all the listening.  Ask questions.  Be curious. Listen to understand.

      Response

      • Is there a truth that God wants you to obey?
      • Is there someone you can share this message with?
      • What is one thing you can do this week in obedience? (I will…)
