Introduction

Culture of Care

Pastoral Care first and foremost is care of the soul.  Soul care is care of the inner life of a person. The goal is the maturing of disciples who become more like Christ.  Two of the foundational metaphors for pastoral care is that of the Shepherd and Priest.

Observation

  • What do these passages tell us about God?
  • What do these passages tell us about you and your life?
  • What did you like about this passage?
  • What did you not like about this passage?

Application

Discuss one or more of the following questions.

  1. Peter said that the royal priesthood is called to offer spiritual sacrifices. We spoke of the sacrifice of praise and prayer, the sacrifice of obedience to Jesus (as a living sacrifice) and the sacrifice of loving others like Jesus did, which requires laying down our lives for others as he did.  Which of these offerings needs most to be strengthened in your life?
  2. In terms of laying down our lives for others we considered how we relate to others. Patience, listening carefully, listening prayerfully, compassionate presence, bold action, and creating opportunities all were suggested. What do you think?  Do you practice any of these already? Is one of them an area in which you would like to grow?
  3. Where do you live your life before the eyes of a watching world – at home, around neighbours, at work, at school, in your sports club, other interest group or in a volunteer role?  How do you represent Christ by your good life and good deeds around others?
  4. Is there any way that, like Peter, you need restoration to Jesus after failing him in some way? Jesus your high priest is reaching out to you.  He still believes in you.  He is still calling you his friend and still interceding for you. What does he ask of you today?
